One of the foremost reason for his success that I find is that his songs were ‘real’. These are not creative songs written by someone sung by Eminem. Most songs could be related to his real life, the experiences that he went through(with some fiction). People could see through his feelings.
He sends a lot of messages white men can relate to like the ‘rebel’ messages sent out, against women who suppress weak men with power. So in general it empowers men. ‘Hate humor’ is no fun, but it works for him.
People are interested in celebrities, and Eminem too. Eminem did something that rightly satisfies people who are curious about celebrities. He wrote songs himself about his life, then it’s simple. A lot of people rush to listen what he is going through in his life like the recent Relapse and upcoming Recovery. Once you get a bunch of people listening, then it’s viral.
